In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood.

I have been in a graphic novel mood in the last couple of  weeks, I applied for paper girls because the cover and description seemed interesting, also because I am familiar Saga, a very popular graphic novel by the same author. Paper Girls begins on Halloween day, with demons invading earth and people suddenly disappearing; four 12-year-old girls will suddenly finding themselves dealing with aliens and time travelers.

The art and color palette were absolutely on point, in my opinion, the colors were absolutely a reminiscence of the big and bright 80's fashion, which was my favorite thing about it all since with the coloring being so vibrant I felt the illustrations do feel like being part of the 80's.

The plot was fast passed and a little weird, which is both good and bad at the same time. The story doesn't drag and moves at a good rhythm, but it was too fast that sometimes you can't get a grip of what is going on or even get to like the characters. It was weird enough for the story to feel unique but it was also confusing at times, there wasn't enough back story and since this was the first volume I was hoping for the world building to be better.

There is barely any development throughout the volume, it was very disappointing, I couldn't get to like any of the girls but I did like the fact they all seem to have different backgrounds and might come closer forming a very strong friendship in future volumes.

The questioning of religions was something unexpected but welcomed, however, the girls being closed minded and using certain terms referring to people with other preferences felt aggressive even if justified by the 80's mentality.

The plot twists (especially at the end) were what kept me going and make me want to continue on with this series, so I guess I will be giving volume 2 a chance. Have you guys read Saga? Are you reading Paper Girls? Let me know in the comments below.

Happy reading,
