In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

I felt I have read a book that could be several pages shorter or non-existent at all since it doesn't add anything to the series. The book is repetitive with scenes that are overly described, it takes so long to pick up and when it does the story isn't as interesting as it was in the first book since it mainly focuses on the relationships between the characters and the main quest of looking for Mortmain's whereabouts becomes something so secondary that at the end of the book I was left wondering if I had actually read a sequel.

Tessa doesn't grow as a character, she stays still. At some point, she is trained which made me think some self-defense techniques would only make her character better giving the fact she has such an extraordinary power and is a smart girl, but truth be told she is never set in motion, in fact, she barely uses her power at all and when she does it is only for the briefest moment. She is also apparently doing some research on what she truly is but this is barely talked about, we get some clues but no questions are really answered because the romance was the main focus of the story.

I was expecting Will to be a good guy deep inside, and he was, nothing new there just too predictable, and his excuse for being a horrible person? Well, it was a little lame, especially because we are talking about people that are very close to knowledge yet seem to have none at all. On the other hand, Jem continues being a really nice person, I want to like him better than I do but I honestly feel he has no personality, being a nice guy with a terrible addiction is all that he is, even when he is mad he is just nice.

The secondary characters were more likeable in this book, Sophie is by far my favorite, I like that she is smart and even though she is a little quiet everytime she talks is to say something interesting. She probably is the voice of reason. I like the dynamics between Charlotte and Henry, they way Charlotte is the leader of the relationship yet tries for Henry to take part too.

About the romance, the love triangle felt like a slap in the face and not only because it was obvious Tessa had feelings for one of the boys since book one and a lot of people noticed but Jem and Will, but because them being parabatai couldn't completely trust in each other. If their bond is so great then why didn't any of them notice that they were both in love with the same girl? Weren't they supposed to know each other so well that they could even finish each other sentences? It seriously annoyed me that Jem didn't notice Will's feelings for Tessa when he is supposed to be such a great observer, I was seriously somewhat disappointed by this because I was expecting a great bromance.

Do you like how romance is portrayed in The Infernal Devices series? What are your thoughts on this book? Let me know in the comments below.

Happy reading,
